Desert Winds III (2009) – Ultimate Las Vegas / Lake Mead Adventure Racing
The Desert Winds 24 2009 will be a 24 hour (+ or -), non-stop adventure race in and around Lake Mead National Recreation Area; within an hour or so of Las Vegas, Nevada.
Mission
To provide a creative race course to adventure athletes with the feel of an expedition length race – that can be done in a weekend – with waterproof maps, waterproof course books, and accurate CP’s.
Course Insights
The course will include trekking, canyoneering, open water adventure swimming and extreme adventure all night mountain biking. There is no paddling this year. The desert scenery on this course is visually striking.

  • The Size of this Course – This is a big course!  It is very remote!

  • Trekking – Teams will be trekking and running in areas that have seen maybe cowboys or miners but probably not hikers. Much of the trekking for this race might be described as being…unique.

  • Adventure Swimming – If you can carry it while trekking or mtbiking, then you can use it during the swim portions. Boogie boards, fins, blow up rafts are all OK. There will be several swim sections totaling about eight (8) km of swimming. Teams will swim on open water, in hidden coves, and in long, narrow, never-swam-in-before canyons of emerald water. Last year the adventure swimming was one of the favorite sections.

  • Water Temperature -  By race day the water should be in the mid to high 60’s. The current water temperature: 59 derees F

  • Mtbiking – The mountain biking is long and remote.Teams will be biking on roads that, except for the bikes of the race staff (i.e. mine), have never seen mtbikes.

  • Post Race Party – all you can eat and drink.

Record Your Route at the Arizona Rogaine Championships – $25

Wednesday, April 15th, 2009

***To reserve your GPS logger, click here***

TrackMe360 will be on location at the North American Rogaine Championships on May 15-17, at the Mogollon Rim in Arizona.  It can be tricky to remember ones route in a rogaine, and using a small, lightweight GPS logger, is a great way to have an exact record of the route taken, for post race analysis.  TrackMe360 will be renting out GISTEQ’s PhotoTrakr Lite, including the AA lithium battery, to Rogaine teams for $25.  This includes e-mail delivery of the route in gpx and kml (Google Earth) formats, as well as a route comparison web site for the Championship at TrackMe360’s Adventure Zone, where all recorded tracks can be viewed.

The Gisteq PhotoTRakr Lite is very small and light, and has a very powerful GPS chip.  It can record points every 10 seconds and one single AA battery lasts about 25 hrs

If you reserve a logger, you will pick up and drop it off to and from Mats Jansson, who is also competing in the rogaine.  More instructions follow online reservation.
