2009 Race Across America – Team Donate Life on Adventure Zone

Tuesday, June 9th, 2009

Team Donate Life has two teams in this year’s Race Across America (RAAM).  TrackMe360 has provided the two teams with GPS trackers, and fans, friends and family will be able to follow them on TrackMe360’s Adventure Zone.  A bit about Team Donate Life…

TDL started with the simple story of a patient… and a doctor. In August 2003, Jason Weckworth donated his kidney to his father. Four months after their transplant, Jason ran the California International Marathon, demonstrating how quickly live donors can return to a very normal and healthy lifestyle with full recovery soon after transplants. One year later in September 2004, Dr. Ric Perez, Chief of the UC Davis Medical Center Transplant Division, called Jason to ask him to participate in the Race Across America (RAAM) 2005 with a group of UCD Medical Center doctors and surgeons, including Dr. Eric Heiden, the 5-Time Olympic Gold Speed Skater. This group of athletic-minded medical staff wanted to further publicize transplantation by entering the hardest bicycle race in the world… with a donor patient in their group. (Of course, no one knew that Jason didn’t even own a bike at the time… until this website story was published! p.s. don’t tell Eric!)
Needless to say, RAAM 2005 was a huge success with media interviews and news stories throughout the country. Upon its successful completion, TDL Directors decided to continue their PR efforts with two teams in 2006 and six teams in 2007.

What started as a simple, crazy idea of some doctors wanting to spread the message of hope and health for future transplant patients and donors has turned into a passionate community of runners, cyclists, ultra-athletes, and friends who care about making a difference in the world.

2009 Mountain-O: Race #2 100 Lakes

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Registration is closed!

Results are posted!

Race #2: 100 Lakes

Our second TrackMe360 Mountain-O takes place on the Western slopes of the Sierra, near Yuba Gap off Hwy 80 between Auburn and Truckee.  Three courses of varying degrees of challenge (short, medium and long) have been designed to showcase the best the area has to offer, with moderate vertical gain and significant cross country travel.  The venue is nothing short of spectacular.  It is not as alpine as the high Sierra, but is just about ideal for Mountain-O, with lots of intricate topographic features and many lakes sprinkled throughout the course – water will not be a problem here!  There is snow still on the course, but it will gradually disappear (except on north facing steep slopes) through the month of June, and it is totally dense and consolidated and easy to walk and run on without snow shoes.  In many cases, the snow makes for easier traveling.  The long course will be a “big mountain course”, meaning fewer checkpoints, with route choice and route finding the primary challenge, not navigation per se. All courses feature a short (< 75 yds) swim for time advantage (make sure to keep the GPS logger dry – it is not waterproof!).  Depending on the day, this may prove to be a refreshing option, or a mental hurdle to decide :)

-Near Yuba Gap off Hwy 80 between Auburn and Truckee, CA
-Race is active: Months of June and July, 2009
-Disciplines: Foot only.  Some trail, lots of cross country, some hard packed snow fields, rock slabs and rock scrambling
-Topo navigation on 1:24,000 MyTopo waterproof maps.

“…Spot Rental worked fantastic…”

Monday, June 1st, 2009

The Spot Rental worked fantastic on my trip.  I used the Spot in the Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness in North Eastern MN in May 2009.
